About the live near the water

Very early people discover the Lake Constance as habitat. The "Pfahlbauten" (huts on posts) as you can see at Uhldingen an at the Federnsee as reconstruction are reconstructions from the huts at 4000 BC.

Later the roman comes, remains of roman colonies founded at different places around the lake. At Konstanz on the "Münsterplatz" they found at excavations the rests of a roman castle wall.

After the roman the Carolingians and the kings from the house of Hohenstaufen come to here. Off the trade with the cities in the north of Italy profited also the cities at lake constanz. The biggest cities at lake Constance are Constance, Friedrichshafen, Bregenz and Radolfzell.

Whereas the old town of Friedrichshafen was destroyed because the air raids in the second war, remain Constance totally undamaged. So Friedrichshafen is today a modern trade city with airport and at Constance and Radolfzell you can stroll threw the oldtown.

At the swiss side you will found a lot of small cities, which have a special attraction with there buildings from the middle age. Especially you will see this in the small city Stein am Rhein (3000 habitants).

A little bit away from the lake, but with a special connection to Lake Constance, is presented the city St. Gallen (CH). With the convent St. Gallen there was a long connection and a exchange of cultural properties with the convent of the island Reichenau.
